MOP's Mission and History
Metro Organizations for People (MOP) was founded in 1979 with the mission of empowering people to strengthen and transform their communities through community organizing. The community organizing process begins locally with member churches, schools, youth and neighborhood associations. MOP trains volunteer community leaders to re-weave the web of relationships in community so that they can effectively work together across race, class and language barriers to rediscover a common good leading to a higher quality of life for our families, children and neighbors.

MOP is currently comprised of 28 member churches, schools, youth and neighborhood associations representing 31,000 families in the six county metro Denver region. MOP is affiliated with PICO a 30 year old network of faith based community organizations in 150 cities nationally.

What is Community Organizing?

“If you give a person a fish, the person will eat once.
If you teach a person to fish, the person will eat for the rest of life.
If you are thinking a year ahead, sow seed.
If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree.
If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate people.
By sowing once, you will harvest once.
By planting a tree, you will harvest tenfold.
By educating people, you will harvest one hundredfold.”

-Kuzn-Tzu, 4th Century B.C.
